Obituary for James Fred Talty

James “Stormy” Fred Talty was born on July 31st, 1950. He recently left this mortal world on June 16th, 2019. Jim was born in Manhattan, Kansas in the backseat of his Grandfather Ferre’s Cadillac during a storm, while trying to reach the hospital at Fort Riley He left this world surrounded by his family during a storm in Middletown, Ohio. Stormy, his Potawatomi name, was extremely proud of this heritage and even danced in the Dance of Honor at a recent PowWow. He was an outstanding artist, poet, and stain-glass artisan. He built everything from large million gallon water tanks, commercial buildings, houses, rabbitries, and pinewood derby cars. Doing an electrical apprenticeship under his beloved Uncle Mike, while living on a sailboat, was one of his favorite periods of his life. He greatly enjoyed sailing and playing guitar. He loved animals and over the years he has had sheep, llamas, cats, turtles, fish, bunnies, and especially dogs. .


He was a brave firefighter for Manhattan, Kansas, where he met his wife Sherry. After moving to Utah, he joined the Sandy City Fire Department and became one of the first IV certified EMTs. During this time he taught fire science classes at UVCC in Provo, UT for the State Fire Training Academy. After retiring from Sandy City, due to a workplace injury, he entered college again at USU. While studying and working in the Environmental Health and Safety Department, he worked his way up to Radiation Safety Officer and Laser Safety Officer for Utah State University in Logan, Utah. He also taught radiation safety classes there. During his tenure as RSO the university did not receive any violations and saving the university untold amounts of money.


He is survived by his wife, Sherry, his four daughters, and 10 grandchildren. Carmelita her husband Ben and their children Abby, Spencer, Michael, and Shawn; Evangelina her husband David, and their children David James and Celina; Karma her husband Erran their children Macy and Andrew; Lynn her husband Stuart and their children Calista and Tristian, and his beloved dog Duncan Pepper. He is also survived by his sister, Penny Moore (Rick) and brother. Thomas (Cyndi).

He was a man who enjoyed life and lived it to its fullest. Jim was and still is
deeply loved. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers the family is accepting
donations to help with final expenses and relocation costs. Checks can be
